Extension of Imran Khan's Jail Custody by 14 Days

Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has had his jail custody extended by 14 days as he faces an investigation into allegations of leaking state secrets, according to his attorney's statement on Wednesday.

A Pakistani court had temporarily suspended Imran Khan's sentence on Tuesday, subsequent to his conviction for the unauthorized sale of state gifts. The court had granted the possibility of releasing him on bail.

A specialized court conducted proceedings within Attock Jail, where Imran Khan was serving a three-year prison term related to the aforementioned charges. His confinement was sustained due to his ongoing remand in the case involving official secrets.

Imran Khan's stay in Attock, located 60 kilometers west of Islamabad, prevented him from participating in the upcoming elections.

Muhammad Shoaib Shaheen, one of Imran Khan's legal representatives, criticized this situation as a manipulation of justice on Tuesday.

During the hearing on Wednesday, focus was placed on a cable that Imran Khan had presented as evidence, indicating his ousting as part of a conspiracy involving the United States. This information was reported by the Federal Investigation Agency under the government's purview.

Both the United States and the Pakistani military have refuted these allegations.

The legal predicaments for Imran Khan commenced after the 70-year-old former cricket captain and national leader lost his position as Prime Minister through a no-confidence vote in April of the previous year.

Imran Khan vehemently denies any misconduct and contends that the charges against him are driven by political motives.

Pakistan is scheduled to conduct a general election later this year, although potential delays might arise due to the necessity of revising constituencies based on the country's most recent census.
